About Us

For 34 years, Dr. Clifford M. Hitomi has cared for the eyes of the Covina community. Since opening his practice in 1992, he has seen patients through every stage of life: first glasses, new prescriptions, and the checkups that quietly keep a family's vision on track. Many of you have been coming here for years, and some of you grew up in these exam chairs.

In 2026, Dr. Hitomi passed the practice to me, his niece. Caring for people's eyes is work I learned to love by watching him over the years, and I couldn't imagine a better way to carry it forward. I'm proud to continue what he built and to grow it for the families who have trusted this office for generations. Dr. Hitomi's patients are still our patients, and the familiar faces, the care, and the sense of being known when you walk in aren't going anywhere. We're also glad to welcome new patients from Covina and the surrounding neighborhoods.

With the new chapter came a new name. The opal is a special stone, historically known as "the eye stone" (ophthalmios) and in ancient and medieval times was believed to be vital to good eyesight. It was also known for its shimmering effect and shifting play-of-color resembling the living eye. Turn it in the light and it reveals something different from every angle. The name, Opal Optometry, was a natural fit for a practice devoted to sight and eye health.

It also captures how we think about care. We believe that every patient is unique. Much like an opal, which reveals different colors depending on how the light meets it, each person who walks through our doors brings their own story, needs, and way of seeing the world. Our job is to take the time to look closely and tailor our care to the individual in front of us, rather than offering one-size-fits-all answers.
